London Diaries: Away We Go

by Paras G. on September 22nd, 2009

On September 6, during my first weekend in London, I found myself at the Vue multiplex in Harrow for a free preview of a film called Away We Go. The film didn’t have a great storyline, but it sure had an inviting poster in the papers. Take a look at it below and judge for yourselves.

Doesn’t the quirky, almost childlike typography (and subtle illustrations in the background) get you all curious to know what the film is about?

The film itself was somewhat interesting (in the same offbeat way that films like 10 Items Or Less, Juno and 2 Days In Paris are) though I had trouble focusing on it thanks to someone’s very stinky breath in the immediate vicinity of my cinema seat. (I’m really looking forward to the day I have my own private theatre with no one around to stink up the place or bother me with irrelevant chatter. These things can really ruin one’s cinema-going experience!)

Did you know that a woman tastes different down in the nether region when she is pregnant? No? Then you might enjoy the opening scene of this film. Or find it downright tasteless (pun intended). To me, it was just useful information to be stored away for future use.

So, on to the story. An unmarried couple (Burt and Verona) in their thirties discover that they are expecting their first child. They also discover that Burt’s parents (who they live close to) are leaving the country and won’t be around during their child’s birth.

Wondering if they are “fuck-ups” and doubtful of the kind of parents they will make, they decide to travel across USA and Canada in search of the ideal city for them to set up home in. They choose cities (Phoenix, Tucson, Madison, Montreal and Miami) where they know people and (rather predictably) these people also tend to be couples with children of their own.

Thus, they find themselves exposed to varying styles of parenting with hilarious consequences for us viewers. In the end though, Burt and Verona figure their own way out … and all is well (while I stifle a few yawns).

Have you seen ‘Away We Go’ yourself? If so, what did you think of it?
